Tryst with Destiny

2nd April, 2011 is India's date with destiny. It will be a date to remember in the annals of the history of Cricket.  It is akin to India's tryst with destiny on 15th August, 1947 when India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru proclaimed the country's Independence.

When skipper M.S.Dhoni hit a massive heave to the boundary in the final stages of the match it opened up a golden moment for Indian cricket.  We have won the gold and silver World Cup for only the second time in history defeating the cream of cricket from all over the world. We proved that we are the Champions.  28 years ago Kapil Dev and his boys lifted the Prudence Cup against all odds beating the mighty West Indies.

The events of the final worked per a preconceived plan.  The in form opening players, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were back in the pavilion for a next to nothing  score line.  A gritty innings by Gautam Gambir with able support from Virat Kohli laid a firm foundation for an able fight back. On Kohli's departure  skipper M.S.Dhoni as if by intuition walked in ahead of Yuvaraj Singh which ultimately proved a master stroke. Not one known for a long patient innings, Dhoni dug in to play himself for a possible long stay to see his team to victory.  Man to man the Sri Lankans were a good team but Dhoni's determination proved the turning point of the game.

It was by no means a massive victory but it nevertheless was a great victory.  Dhoni's last ball six was a show of authority which Sri Lanka will not forget in a hurry.

Excellent write-up Daddy.. Such a grand moment for all of us Indians when Dhoni hit the final sixer and lifted the World Cup glorifying India’s name for eternity.. Although it is India’s second World Cup victory, this is the first one that I am witnessing and I’m glad that we could share India’s winning moments together 🙂 What a wonderful game of cricket it was.. Three cheers for India!!!
